Michael Varhol studied photography with Emmet Gowin at the Dayton Art Institute and was a photo officer at the US Army Photo Agency in the Pentagon. Based in Los Angeles, he is also a screenwriter with credits that include the cult classics “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure” and “The Big Picture.” I mostly photograph the neighborhoods where I’ve lived and the streets where I drive. If I see something interesting, I shoot it.

A Walk in the Park – Central Park Photographs

I took my first walk in Central Park with my camera the day before my wedding to a 3rd generation New Yorker who grew up with Central Park as her playground. Our home is in Los Angeles but we returned to Manhattan in summer and winter to visit her mother on Central Park South. I photographed the park exclusively on black and white film for more than a decade before I took my first digital pictures. Reflecting seasonal changes through re-occurring images became the concept for “A Walk in the Park.”
